Task 03: Development & Design

1.Instruction

2.Process Work

First, this is my initial sketch. To make it easier to explain the following changes, I labelled each frame with a number at the bottom right:

Sketch 1

Based on Mr. Max’s feedback from Task 2, I reconsidered the relationship between colour and emotion. I redesigned most of the colour schemes and adjusted how each emotion is represented visually. I also replaced “calm” (Frame 4) with “anger” to create a stronger visual impact:

After showing this version to Mr. Max, he pointed out that some emotions were still not clearly matched with their colours, and certain colour combinations felt unbalanced. Therefore, I made further adjustments to the colours:

1. I reduced the saturation of “sadness” (Frame 1) to better express a dull and low emotional state.

2. I changed the colour tone of “sleep” (Frame 3) to a cooler palette, creating a more peaceful night-time feeling.

3. I adjusted the face colour of “happiness” (Frame 5) to pink, to give a warmer and more pleasant atmosphere.

In addition, I removed the emotion “jealousy” (Frame 6) and replaced it with “irritation”, using a new colour scheme to better match the emotion.

Mr. Max also pointed out that I placed similar colour tones too close to each other, which made the composition lack rhythm. To solve this, I rearranged the order of the frames to create better visual variation and flow.

Finally, I refined each frame by cleaning up the edges, removing unnecessary lines, and correcting colour overlaps. I added shadows to the monkey to give it more depth and make it look more three-dimensional. I also applied a canvas texture to each frame and added shadows to the borders, so that the images look like they are displayed on a gallery wall. This process led to my final work:

4.Feedback

Week 6

In Week 6, I continued refining my sketches based on the feedback. My lecturer pointed out that some emotions are still not clearly matched with the colours, making it difficult for viewers to immediately understand the intended emotions. He also mentioned that the arrangement of the six frames needs to be improved, as similar colour tones are placed too close together, which reduces the sense of rhythm.

Based on this feedback, I adjusted the relationship between colour and emotion and rearranged the composition to create stronger contrast and rhythm. After making these improvements, I completed Task 3.

Week 7

In Week 7, I completed Task 3 and finalised my portfolio. I organised all my process work into a clear and structured presentation.
