During the week 1, we worked on two exercises, “Mints” and “Doritos,” with guidance from Mr. Kanna. These tasks helped me understand the basic functions of Premiere Pro, especially how to organize different clips and edit them into a complete video.

I used Adobe Premiere Pro for editing. Since it was my first time using the software, it took me some time to learn the basic functions and get familiar with the interface. I had to figure out the correct order of the clips and repeatedly play the sequence back to check whether everything was arranged correctly.

Our short video was filmed in a group of four. The production roles were assigned through a lucky draw. In the end, Wang ZiHan and Wang XinYi took on the role of directors, while Shen YiTong and I acted in the video. I played the role of a stalker, which I found quite interesting and enjoyable.

During the filming process, we consciously applied the knowledge we learned in class and tried to include as many different shot types as possible. This helped us gain a better understanding of camera techniques and visual storytelling.

After filming, I moved on to the editing process. I first trimmed and arranged the video clips in the correct order. Then, I carefully selected suspenseful background music to build tension and enhance the mood of the story. I also adjusted the colour grading to give the video a more horror-film-like atmosphere. Finally, I added subtitles to label the different shot types used throughout the video.

I am very satisfied with the final outcome, as it successfully demonstrates the shot techniques we learned while also creating an engaging and suspenseful viewing experience.

This exercise required us to take photographs that matched the shot types shown in the lecture slides. Working in a group of four, we took turns photographing each other and tried to recreate the compositions from the slides as accurately as possible while also working efficiently. This exercise was very helpful in improving my understanding of different shot types and made them much easier to remember.

W8:Color Correction & Grading Exercise

Week 8 slide:

When I first laid eyes on the Lumetri Color panel, I felt quite intimidated. The interface looked overwhelmingly complicated, and I thought I’d never get the hang of it. Once I actually got down to editing, however, I realized this exercise was relatively straightforward compared to the previous ones.
I first did basic trimming and speed adjustments on the three shots, then worked to match their white balance uniformly, tweaking shadows, exposure, saturation and other parameters. After that, I dialed down the saturation and shifted the tint slightly toward green. My goal was to create a specific mood: the character had an 8 a.m. class but only woke up at 10 a.m. The sky was already fully bright, yet she’d just jolted awake in agony, realizing it was already too late for everything.

This week, I learned to create a VFX shot in After Effects that depicts a character being blasted away. I hadn’t used After Effects in a long time, so it took me a while to get reacquainted with its tools and workflows. Even though the lecturer walked through the entire production process multiple times in class, I still struggled to keep up. I often messed up the order of operations or applied effects to the wrong video clips. Fortunately, I persisted and managed to finish the task. I also adjusted the footage speed to make the movements in the final piece more cohesive and natural.
