DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY AND IMAGING - Week 5

October 22, 2025

Lectures:

This week, Mr. Fauzi taught us about Double Exposure and Blending Modes in Photoshop.Double exposure means combining two or more photos into one single image. This effect can be created directly with a camera or digitally in Photoshop. In Photoshop, it can be done using blending modes and layer masks.Mr. Fauzi explained several creative ideas for double exposure; He also explained how Blending Modes work.Blending modes control how layers interact in terms of light, color, and texture.Mr. Fauzi demonstrated how to use the Screen mode to combine fire and smoke with a background, creating a realistic effect. He reminded us that experimenting with different combinations is important since every photo reacts differently depending on its light and color.

Tutorial:

This week, we practiced photo editing and composition using the Double Exposure technique.Mr. Fauzi demonstrated how to blend a portrait with a landscape into one single image. He showed how to use layer masks, blending modes, and the gradient tool to make the textures merge naturally. We also learned how to adjust contrast, lighting, and opacity to make the composition look more balanced and clean.

Practical:

We completed Project 2A: Double Exposure, which was divided into two parts.

Part 1 – Tutorial Practice
We followed the class demo using the given images to create a basic double exposure composition.
During the process, we used layer masks, adjusted brush opacity, and experimented with blending modes such as Screen and Overlay.
The goal was to understand how to blend light and texture smoothly between two images.

Part 2 – My Own Creation
We created our own double exposure using self-selected photos.
I used a portrait of myself and combined it with a snowy wild landscape and a sheep to express a dreamlike and surreal feeling.
I adjusted the tones and used gradient masks to make the transition natural.
Through this process, I learned more about the connection between light, contrast, and emotion in visual expression.
