Digital Photography And Imaging - Week 4

DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY AND IMAGING - Week 4

October 15, 2025

Lectures:

This week, Mr. Fauzi introduced Adjustment Layers and Filters in Photoshop.Adjustment layers help edit color, tone, and brightness without changing the original image. They are useful for fine-tuning exposure and color balance.
He demonstrated tools like Brightness/Contrast, Levels, Curves, Exposure, and Selective Color. He also explained that filters are used to add effects such as blur, texture, or noise to make images look more natural or creative. These techniques are essential for digital imaging and compositing.

Tutorial:

We learned to use lighting adjustments, adjustment layers, and filters to improve realism in photo composition.Mr. Fauzi demonstrated how to match lighting between photos and apply filters to balance tone.He also explained how to use the Pen Tool to refine shapes and cut out precise selections.

Practical:

We worked on Project 1B, which had two parts — Hearst Mansion and Recoloring Black and White.

Part 1 – Hearst Mansion

We followed a Photoshop exercise using Quick Selection Tool, Layer Mask, and Filters to place the character Shazam into the Hearst Mansion scene.

We learned to remove the background, adjust color matching, and create shadow and reflection layers. The steps included adding noise to match texture, applying Gaussian Blur to soften shadows, and using the Ripple Filter for reflection effects.

Finally, we replaced Shazam with our own photo, using correct lighting and eye-level framing for realism.

My works:

Exercise 01 - PART 1 (Shazam)

Exercise 02 - PART 1 (Swimsuit)

Exercise 03 - PART 1 (Ownphoto)

Part 2 – Recoloring Black and White

We practiced recoloring black-and-white portraits using Photoshop’s Marquee Tool, Eyedropper, and Brush Tool.

We created new layers for different parts — skin, hair, eyes, lips, and background — and applied color using Soft Light blending mode.We learned to build multiple layer masks, refine edges, and balance highlights, midtones, and shadows for a natural result. The goal was to make the old photo look lifelike while maintaining a soft, realistic color tone.

For the Recoloring exercise, I applied warm tones to bring the portrait to life.
Adjustment layers and filters helped me match tones and textures.
